Hayya photo rules in plain words
The official Hayya Personal Photo Guideline asks for a digital photo, not a printed one. The size is 40x30 mm (1.57 x 1.18 in), supplied as a JPG of at most 2 MB (2048 KB). IDPhotoly produces it at 354x472 pixels at 300 DPI. The guideline also states a minimum resolution of 720 px, but it does not say on which axis, so 720x960 is a safe choice if you need larger pixels.
- Face size: the face fills 70-80% of the photo; the head is about 28-32 mm from chin to crown.
- Background: plain white or light grey, even, with no shadows or glare.
- Glasses: allowed if there is no glare.
- Head covering: religious only, with the face fully visible.
- Age of photo: less than 12 months old.
Many websites quote the wrong size
Several sites cite 35x45 mm or a 120 KB limit for Hayya. The official guideline says 40x30 mm and a maximum of 2 MB, so a photo prepared to the wrong template may be rejected when you upload it.
How to take the photo at home with a phone
Stand in front of a plain white or light grey wall, with soft light on your face from the front. Hold the phone at eye height, look straight into the lens and keep a neutral expression. Fill the frame so that the face takes up 70-80% of the picture.
- Check glasses for glare; remove them if reflections persist.
- Avoid shadows or glare on the face and background.
- Do not use filters or beauty modes.
IDPhotoly processes the image in your browser without uploading it, crops it, replaces the background and checks the face proportion.
Common reasons for rejection
- Wrong dimensions. A 35x45 mm template does not match the 40x30 mm guideline.
- File over 2 MB. The maximum is 2048 KB.
- Face too small. The face should fill 70-80% of the photo.
- Glare or shadows. The background and face should be evenly lit.
- Old photo. It must be less than 12 months old.
Uploading the photo
Download the JPG and upload it in the Hayya application. No printing is needed. Payment is one-time, and you receive a full refund if an authority rejects the photo.
Tips for a clean result
Because Hayya accepts only a digital file, the framing and the file size are what matter. Keep the head centred, leave a small margin above the hair and check that the face fills most of the frame. If you apply for several family members, prepare each photo separately so that every file is under the 2 MB limit and each person is evenly lit and clearly visible.
