The Iran passport photo rules in plain words
The passport application asks for three colour photos of 3x4 cm (30x40 mm, or 1.18 x 1.57 in). The background must be plain white. Hats and glasses are not allowed. Women must wear a head scarf (hijab), as long as the full face stays visible from chin to forehead.
- Size: 30x40 mm, width by height.
- Digital version: 355x473 px at 300 DPI, JPG.
- File size for the Mikhak system: under 300 KB per file.
- Background: plain white.
- Glasses: not allowed.
- Head covering: religious only, face fully visible.
The official guide does not give a head height in millimetres, so keep your head centred with a little space above it and your shoulders level.
How to take the photo at home with a phone
Choose a plain white wall or hang a clean white sheet, and stand about one metre in front of it so your shadow does not fall on the background. Use daylight from a window in front of you. Have someone take the picture at eye height from a short distance, and avoid wide-angle selfies.
- Remove glasses and any hat.
- If you wear a hijab, make sure it frames the face without covering the forehead, cheeks or chin.
- Look straight into the lens with a neutral expression.
- Check that the picture is sharp and free of glare.
Common reasons an Iran passport photo is rejected
- Coloured or shadowed background. Only plain white is accepted.
- Glasses or hats. Neither is allowed.
- Part of the face hidden. A scarf that covers the forehead or chin is a problem.
- Wrong size. A photo that is not 3x4 cm will not match the form.
- File over 300 KB. The Mikhak system will not accept larger uploads.
- Blur or poor lighting. Dark or uneven faces cannot be verified.
Before you leave home, compare the finished photo with an official sample if you have one: the face should be centred, the top of the head should not be cut off, and both shoulders should be level and visible. A quick check now saves a second trip to the passport office.
Printing and uploading
You need printed copies as well as digital files, so prepare both. For printing, IDPhotoly can arrange several 30x40 mm photos on one sheet, which makes it simple to get the three copies cut out. For the Mikhak upload, use the digital JPG and keep each file under 300 KB.
The photo is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers. If an official authority rejects it, you can ask for a full refund within 30 days by email.
