About IDPhotoly

IDPhotoly is an independent online tool that prepares passport, visa and ID photos according to the official rules of each document.

Why we built it

Official photos should not be difficult or expensive. In practice, many people pay a studio a high price for a few small prints, and others have their application delayed because of a small mistake: a head that is slightly too small, a shadow on the background, or a file that is a few kilobytes over the limit. We wanted a tool that applies the rules precisely, every time, and explains clearly when a photo does not meet them.

Privacy by design

A passport photo is a sensitive picture. That is why IDPhotoly processes your photo in your browser instead of sending it to a server. Face detection, cropping and background replacement all happen on your device. If you choose to keep an optional backup, it is encrypted in your browser with a key that only you hold and is deleted automatically after 7 days. You can read the details in our privacy policy.

How we handle requirements

Photo requirements are set by government agencies and they do change. Our approach is simple:

  • Every document page links to the official source of its requirements.
  • Every document shows a "rules checked" date so you can see how recent our review is.
  • We review requirements regularly and update them when an authority changes its rules.
  • If you spot a rule that looks outdated, please tell us through the contact page. Reports from readers are one of the most useful ways we find changes.

Independent, not a government site

IDPhotoly is an independent service. We are not affiliated with any government, embassy or official agency, and we cannot guarantee that an authority will accept a photo. What we do offer is a careful implementation of the published rules and a refund if an official authority rejects a photo made with our service, as described in our refund policy.
