Turkish passport photo rules in plain words
The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs (NVI) uses a larger biometric format than most countries. The printed size is 50x60 mm (1.97 x 2.36 in) at 300 DPI, and the background must be plain white with no shadows. Many photo templates for other countries use 35x45 mm, which is not the Turkish size.
- Copies: 1.
- Age of photo: taken within the last 6 months.
- Glasses: allowed if there is no glare.
- Head covering: a headscarf is allowed if the face is visible from chin to forehead; otherwise religious only, with the face fully visible.
- Head size: NVI does not publish an official head-height range.
How to take the photo at home with a phone
Because the frame is closer to square than 35x45 mm, leave a little more room around the head and shoulders when you take the picture. Stand in front of a plain white wall with window light on your face, keep the phone at eye height and look straight into the lens. Keep a neutral expression.
- If you wear glasses, check the screen for reflections and adjust the angle of your head slightly if needed.
- Make sure the face is visible from chin to forehead if you wear a headscarf.
- Avoid shadows behind and beside your head.
IDPhotoly processes the photo in your browser without uploading it, crops it to 50x60 mm, replaces the background with white and checks the framing.
Common reasons for rejection
- Wrong format. A 35x45 mm photo does not match the 50x60 mm biometric requirement.
- Shadows on the background. The background must be plain white and free of shadows.
- Glare on glasses. Reflections on the lenses hide the eyes.
- Old photo. The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months.
- Face partly covered. The face must be visible from chin to forehead.
Printing the photo
The Turkish passport application uses a printed photo. Download the file and print 1 copy at 300 DPI at 50x60 mm on photo paper. If you use a photo shop, state the size clearly, because the default passport size there may be 35x45 mm.
Tips for a clean result
Choose a recent picture with an even expression. Do not use filters or retouching, and keep the same file you checked rather than resizing it again.
Payment is one-time, and you receive a full refund if an authority rejects the photo.
