South Korea visa photo rules in plain words
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea asks for one printed colour photo of 35x45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) on a plain white or off-white background. The photo must be taken within the last 6 months and show your full face with the eyes open.
- Copies: 1.
- Glasses: not allowed.
- Head covering: religious only, with the face fully visible.
- Head size: not stated by the embassy.
The embassy page does not give a head-size range or a detailed glasses rule beyond the above, and it states that acceptance is at the embassy's discretion. This is why a clean, conventional passport-style framing is the safest approach.
How to take the photo at home with a phone
Face a window in front of a plain white wall. Stand slightly away from the wall to avoid a shadow behind your head. Hold the phone at eye height, face the lens directly and keep your expression neutral. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible.
- Remove your glasses and keep hair away from your eyes.
- Do not turn your head to the side; the photo must be full-face.
- Do not use filters, which can change skin tones and make the photo look unnatural.
IDPhotoly processes the image in your browser without uploading it, crops it to 35x45 mm, replaces the background and checks the framing.
Common reasons for rejection
- Black-and-white photo. The embassy asks for a colour photo.
- Old photo. It must have been taken within 6 months.
- Head turned or eyes closed. A full-face view with open eyes is expected.
- Glasses on. Glasses are not allowed.
- Uneven or coloured background. Only plain white or off-white is accepted.
Printing the photo
A South Korea visa photo is submitted as a printed photo. Download the file, print it at 300 DPI at 35x45 mm on photo paper and attach 1 copy to your visa application. Because acceptance is at the embassy's discretion, check the instructions of the embassy or consulate that handles your application before you print.
Tips for a clean result
Choose a recent picture that looks like you on the day you apply. Keep both ears and your hairline visible where possible, sit upright and keep the shoulders level. If the first attempt shows shadows, move closer to the window and try again.
Payment is one-time, and you receive a full refund if an authority rejects the photo.
