South Korean passport photo rules in plain words
These rules come from the MOFA passport.go.kr photo standard leaflet (2022.10 revision). The photo is 35x45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) at 300 DPI. Online applications recommend 413x531 px as a JPG.
- Head size: crown (excluding hair) to chin 3.2-3.6 cm.
- Background: uniform white, with no border. Artificial background removal is not accepted by MOFA.
- Glasses: allowed with no glare, but no tinted lenses or frames over the eyes.
- Expression: no teeth showing.
- Head covering: religious reasons only, with the face fully visible.
- Age of the photo: taken within 6 months.
A note on background removal
The leaflet says there should be no artificial background removal, so the best result is a photo that was shot against a plain white wall. Take the original picture carefully and let the tool only crop and check it, instead of relying on it to fix a messy background.
How to take it at home with a phone
Stand in front of a clean white wall, in even light from the front. Keep a distance of a step or two from the wall so that shadows do not show. Ask someone to hold the phone at eye level, and look straight at the lens with a closed mouth, so no teeth show.
Keep your hair off your eyes, and check that glasses, if worn, have no reflections.
Processing
The photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded. It is cropped to 35x45 mm, with the head height checked against 3.2-3.6 cm.
Common reasons for rejection
- A background that is not uniform white, or has a border.
- Visible traces of artificial background removal.
- A head height outside 3.2-3.6 cm.
- Teeth showing in a smile.
- Tinted lenses, or frames covering the eyes.
- A photo older than 6 months.
Printing and uploading
The submission is printed and digital, and one copy is listed. For a print, use 35x45 mm at 300 DPI on photo paper and check it with a ruler. For an online application, upload the 413x531 px JPG.
If an authority rejects the photo, you get a full refund.
Matching the photo to the application
Because the photo must be from the last 6 months, avoid reusing an older picture even if it looks fine. If you apply online, the 413x531 px JPG is the recommended size, so keep it unchanged after you download it. If you apply on paper, check that the printed head height still falls within the 3.2-3.6 cm range.
