Applies to the 5-year (non-biometric) passport: 4 photos at consulates, face 70-80% of the photo, chin about 15 mm from the bottom edge. The 10-year biometric passport photo is taken on site, so our photo is not usable for it; Gosuslugi upload limits are not officially published (third-party claims vary). Official wording: face oval fills 70-80% of the photo area (not head height) with the chin about 15 mm above the bottom edge, so no head-height range is stored.

Russian international passport photo rules

These rules come from the Embassy of Russia in Poland (kdmid.ru) page on foreign passport requirements. The photo is 35x45 mm, or 413x531 px at 300 DPI as a JPG.

  • Head size: 31.5-36 mm from chin to crown, with the face filling 70-80% of the photo.
  • Chin position: about 15 mm from the bottom edge.
  • Background: white or light plain, with no stripes, spots or shadows.
  • Glasses: allowed, but without glare.
  • Head covering: religious reasons only, with the face fully visible.
  • Copies: four photos at consulates.

Which passport this photo is for

These rules apply to the 5-year, non-biometric passport. The 10-year biometric passport photo is taken on site, so a photo made here cannot be used for it. Always check which passport type you are applying for before you print.

Taking the photo at home with a phone

Use a plain light wall and soft light from the front, and stand a short distance from the wall so you cast no shadow on it. Have someone hold the phone at eye level. Look straight ahead, close your mouth and keep your face relaxed.

Leave room around your head. The tool crops the photo and positions the chin about 15 mm from the bottom edge.

Processing

The photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded. It is cropped to the 35x45 mm format, the background is replaced and the head size is checked.

Why these photos get rejected

  • Stripes, spots or shadows on the background.
  • A face that fills less than 70-80% of the photo.
  • A chin too close to the bottom edge or too far from it.
  • Glare on glasses that hides the eyes.
  • Fewer than four prints handed in at the consulate.
  • Using the photo for the 10-year biometric passport, where the photo is taken on site.

Printing and uploading

Print four copies at 300 DPI at 35x45 mm and check the size with a ruler. A digital JPG at 413x531 px is also provided. The Gosuslugi upload limits are not officially published, and third-party claims vary, so follow what the service shows when you upload.

If an authority rejects the photo, you get a full refund.

Before you go to the consulate

Count the prints before you leave home. Four identical copies are needed, so it helps to print a spare sheet in case one is damaged when you cut it. Keep the chin about 15 mm above the bottom edge, and do not trim the photo smaller than 35x45 mm. Confirm with your consulate which passport type you are applying for, since only the 5-year non-biometric passport uses this photo.
