When you need to supply a photo
In Kazakhstan the passport photo is captured live at a public service centre (TsON) or a documentation terminal, so applicants there cannot bring their own. When you apply through a consulate abroad, the embassy instead asks for four colour prints of 3.5x4.5 cm. This page covers those prints.
The rules in plain words
- Size: 35x45 mm, width by height (1.38 x 1.77 in), at 300 dpi.
- Copies: 4, all from the same shot.
- Colour: colour photos only.
- Background: light, with white customary.
- Face size: the face takes up about 75% of the photo area.
- Glasses: allowed if there is no glare.
- Head covering: religious reasons only, face fully visible.
- Image integrity: scanned, computer-modelled or photocopied images are not allowed.
How to take it at home
Choose a spot facing a window with a plain light wall behind you. Have someone take the photo at eye level in portrait orientation, from a distance that lets your head and shoulders fill the frame. Keep your expression neutral, your mouth closed and both eyes open. Avoid a flash directly in your face, which can cause hot spots on the skin and glare on glasses.
Add the picture to IDPhotoly. The tool crops it to 35x45 mm in your browser, replaces the background with a plain light one and lays the result out for printing, so all four copies come from a single shot.
Common reasons for rejection
- Copies taken from different pictures instead of one shot.
- A photocopy or a scan of an old print.
- A face that is too small in the frame.
- A patterned or dark background.
- Glare on the glasses or shadows on the face.
- Visible editing that changes how you look.
Printing and submitting
Download the 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) sheet and print it on photo paper at 100 percent or actual size, never fit to page. Measure one photo with a ruler to confirm 35 mm by 45 mm, then cut along the guides. A kiosk or photo lab works too, as long as it does not rescale the file. Submit all four prints with your application.
Consulates can add local requirements, so check the current list with your mission before you apply. IDPhotoly is not affiliated with any government. If an official authority rejects a photo made with the service, you can request a full refund by email within 30 days.
