What France-Visas requires

The France-Visas portal, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior, asks for a recent photo that follows the ICAO standard.

  • Size: 35-40 mm wide by 45 mm high. IDPhotoly uses 35x45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) at 300 dpi.
  • Copies: 1 printed photo.
  • Face size: 32-36 mm (about 70-80% of the photo) from chin to forehead, hair excluded.
  • Background: plain and uniform, light in colour. The exact colour is not specified.
  • Glasses: allowed if there is no glare.
  • Head covering: religious reasons only, with the face fully visible.

Which background colour is safest

Because France-Visas does not name a colour, a plain light grey or light blue background is the safest option. Whatever you choose, keep it even, with no shadows, texture or pattern, and make sure it contrasts with your hair and skin.

How to take the photo at home

Face a window in daylight and stand in front of a plain light wall. Have a helper hold the phone at eye level, upright, and take a straight-on shot of your head and shoulders. Keep your head level, your mouth closed and a neutral expression, with both eyes open. Tie long hair back so your face is clear, and avoid reflective glasses.

Upload the picture to IDPhotoly. The photo is processed in your browser, set to 35x45 mm with the face height inside the 32-36 mm range, and the background is made plain and even.

Reasons photos are refused

  • A face that is too small, with too much space above the head.
  • A background with shadows, texture or a strong colour.
  • Glare on glasses, or frames covering the eyes.
  • A smile that opens the mouth, or closed eyes.
  • Filters or retouching that change the face.
  • An old photo that no longer looks like you.

Printing it

Download the 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) sheet and print it at 100 percent or actual size on photo paper. Do not use fit to page. Measure one photo with a ruler to check 35 mm by 45 mm and the face height of 32-36 mm. Cut along the guides.

At the visa appointment

The printed photo goes with your application. Each consulate or visa centre can add its own instructions, so read the checklist from the centre where you will apply.
