What the China Consular app asks for
For Chinese passport applications made abroad, the embassy guide for the China Consular app describes how the digital photo must look.
- Format and size: JPG or PNG under 5 MB. IDPhotoly exports a 390x567 px JPG.
- Geometry: the passport standard is 33x48 mm (1.3 x 1.89 in) at 300 dpi.
- Head height: 28-33 mm from chin to crown, with the crown 3-5 mm from the top.
- Background: pure white.
- Clothing: a dark top. White or light clothes are not accepted.
- Face: both ears and eyebrows visible.
- Glasses: allowed if there is no glare, and the frames must not cover the eyes.
- Head covering: religious reasons only, with the face fully visible.
No official pixel size is published, and the app's photo check is advisory with a final manual review.
What not to upload
Do not photograph a printed picture and do not use a screenshot of your old passport. The app does not accept either.
Taking the photo at home
Stand in front of a plain white wall, facing a window. Wear a plain dark top. The helper holds the phone at eye level, in portrait orientation, and captures your head and shoulders. Keep your hair off your ears and eyebrows, your mouth closed, your expression neutral and your eyes open.
Add the picture to IDPhotoly. It processes the photo in your browser, crops it to the 33x48 mm ratio, sets the head within 28-33 mm and replaces the background with pure white.
Reasons photos are rejected
- A light or white top that blends into the background.
- Ears or eyebrows hidden by hair.
- Glasses with glare or frames over the eyes.
- A grey or shadowed background instead of pure white.
- A photo of a print or a screenshot of an old passport.
- A file over 5 MB or in the wrong format.
Upload and review
Use the JPG as exported. Do not re-save it through another app, which can add compression and change the colours of the background. Upload it in the China Consular app and look at the app's photo check. Because that check is advisory, a manual review still decides the outcome.
Procedures may differ between embassies, so follow your mission's guide. IDPhotoly is not affiliated with any government. If an official authority rejects a photo made with the service, you can request a full refund by email within 30 days.
