Australian passport photo rules in plain words
The Australian Passport Office accepts photos from 35-40 mm wide and 45-50 mm high; 35x45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 in) at 300 DPI is the usual choice. The head must measure 32-36 mm from chin to crown. The background should be plain white or light grey with no shadows.
- Copies: 2 printed photos.
- Age of photo: under 6 months old.
- Glasses: not allowed, except for medical reasons.
- Head covering: religious only, with the face fully visible.
How to take the photo at home with a phone
Stand in front of a plain white or light grey wall, a short distance away so your head does not cast a shadow on it. Use even window light from the front. Hold the phone at eye level, look straight at the lens and keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open.
- Take off your glasses unless you need them for medical reasons.
- Keep your hair away from your face.
- Take several shots and choose the sharpest, evenly lit one.
IDPhotoly processes the image in your browser without uploading it, crops it to the right proportions, replaces the background and checks the head size against the 32-36 mm range.
Common reasons Australian passport photos are rejected
- Inkjet or office printing. The office expects a dye-sublimation print on heavy glossy paper of at least 200 gsm, not an inkjet print.
- Head too large or too small. The chin-to-crown measurement must be 32-36 mm.
- Glasses worn. Glasses are only accepted for medical reasons.
- Old photo. The photo must be under 6 months old.
- Shadows or a patterned background. The background must be plain white or light grey.
Printing the photo
This is a printed-photo application, so the print quality matters as much as the framing. Download the file from IDPhotoly and take it to a photo lab that can produce a dye-sublimation print on heavy glossy paper (minimum 200 gsm). Order 2 identical prints, because the application needs 2 photos. A home inkjet printer is not suitable.
Tips for a clean result
Look straight at the camera, keep your shoulders level and avoid tilting your head. Do not use filters or beauty modes, since the photo must show your natural appearance. Once the compliance check passes, avoid resizing the file again.
Payment is one-time, and you receive a full refund if an authority rejects the photo.
