What the Indonesia e-Visa photo must look like
The Directorate General of Immigration asks for a digital portrait only. There is no print size. The official e-Visa manual describes a colour image in JPEG, JPG or PNG format with a minimum size of 400x600 pixels.
- Head size: from the top of the hair to the chin, the head takes up 50-60% of the image height.
- Eye line: the eyes sit 50-60% of the height up from the bottom edge.
- Pose: face straight to the camera, formal clothes.
- Glasses: not allowed.
- Head covering: only for religious reasons, and the whole face must stay visible.
- Background: the manual does not state a colour. Plain white is the usual choice and avoids doubt.
File size: stay under 200 KB
The manual allows up to 2 MB, but the current evisa.imigrasi.go.id page states a limit of 200 KB. The two sources disagree, so the safe route is a JPG below 200 KB. A 400x600 px portrait at 300 dpi compresses well, so this limit is easy to meet without visible damage.
How to take the photo at home with a phone
Stand about an arm's length from a plain light wall and face a window so the light falls evenly on your face. Ask someone to take the picture with the phone held at eye level, in portrait orientation. Keep your head level, mouth closed and both eyes open. Wear a plain, formal top rather than a white one that blends into the wall.
Upload the picture to IDPhotoly. The photo is processed in your browser, cropped to the 400x600 px portrait ratio, the background is replaced with plain white and the file is exported as a JPG under the size limit.
Common reasons the photo is rejected
- The head is too small because the photo was taken from far away, or too large because it was cropped too tightly.
- The file is over the size limit, or smaller than 400x600 px.
- Glasses, with or without glare.
- Shadows on the face or on the wall behind you.
- A tilted head or a casual pose instead of a straight, formal one.
- A heavily edited or filtered image.
Uploading it to the e-Visa form
The application is completed on the official Indonesian eVisa website, where you attach the photo as a file. Check the file name extension, make sure it is a portrait and look at the preview before you submit. If the portal asks for a different limit at the time you apply, follow the portal. Nothing needs to be printed for the e-Visa or the e-VOA.
IDPhotoly is not affiliated with any government. If an official authority rejects a photo made with the service, you can request a full refund by email within 30 days.
