Glasses, Head Coverings and Beards in Photos
Small details of appearance cause many rejections. This guide explains the general approach to glasses, head coverings, facial hair, makeup and jewellery. Rules differ from one country and document to another, so treat this page as a starting point and confirm the details on the page of your document.
Glasses
Many countries ban glasses in official photos. Others allow them as long as there is no glare and no tint, and the eyes are clearly visible. Frames must not cover the eyes. If you are unsure, take your glasses off for the photo, unless your document page says they are allowed or a medical need applies. Where glasses are allowed, tilt the light source away from the lenses to avoid reflections.
Religious head coverings
Religious head coverings are generally allowed if the face is fully visible, from the chin to the forehead, and both edges of the face can be seen. The covering must not cast a shadow on the face. Some documents set additional conditions, so check the page for your document.
Hats and headbands
Hats, caps and headbands are not allowed. Remove them, and keep hair accessories small and clear of the face.
Beards and moustaches
A beard or moustache is allowed if it reflects your normal appearance. If you have recently changed your look, take a photo that matches how you appear now, so officers can recognise you.
Hair over the eyebrows or eyes
Hair must not cover your eyebrows or your eyes. Pin it back or move it to the side so both eyes and the full forehead outline are visible.
Makeup and filters
Heavy makeup that changes the way your face looks is not allowed, and neither are filters or retouching. Natural makeup is fine as long as you still look like yourself.
Coloured contact lenses
Coloured contact lenses are not allowed in several countries, as they change the appearance of the eyes. If you wear them, check your document page or remove them for the photo.
Jewellery and piercings
Jewellery and piercings are allowed if they do not cover the face or cause glare. Large earrings, nose rings that reflect light and anything near the eyes can cause problems, so keep it simple.
Check each document page
Because the rules change by document, use the page for your country and document for the exact requirement. IDPhotoly checks the photo against those rules before you pay, processes it in your browser without uploading it, and offers a full refund if an official authority rejects it, requested by email at [email protected] within 30 days.
