Brazilian passport photo rules in plain words
The Policia Federal (PF) page for the 5x7 photograph says that only applicants under 5 years old bring a recent photo. Everyone aged 5 or over is photographed at the PF office, so you do not need your own picture in that case. The printed photo is 50x70 mm (1.97 x 2.76 in) at 300 DPI.
- Copies: 1.
- Glasses: not allowed.
- Head covering: not allowed.
- Background: not specified by the PF; white is customary.
- Head size: not specified officially.
Who needs to bring a photo
If you are 5 or older, check your appointment details with the Federal Police rather than ordering prints, since you will be photographed on site. A printed 5x7 cm photo is only relevant for a young child, so this page mainly helps parents preparing a photo of a baby or toddler.
How to take the photo at home with a phone
Lay the child on a plain white sheet or seat them in front of a white wall, with soft window light from the front. Hold the phone at the child's eye level and capture the face looking at the camera. Take many pictures and pick the one where the eyes are open and the face is clearly visible.
- Make sure no accessories, hats or hair clips cover the face.
- Avoid shadows by keeping the child away from the wall.
- Do not use flash, which can cause glare.
IDPhotoly processes the image in your browser without uploading it, crops it to 50x70 mm, replaces the background with white and checks the framing.
Common reasons for rejection
- Face covered. Accessories that cover the face are not accepted.
- Old photo. The PF asks for a recent photo.
- Wrong size. The photo must be 5x7 cm, not 35x45 mm.
- Glasses or headwear. Neither is allowed for this document.
- Blurry print. A child's photo needs a sharp print to be usable.
Printing the photo
Download the file and print 1 copy at 300 DPI at 50x70 mm on photo paper. Because the PF does not specify a background colour, white is the customary choice. Payment is one-time, and you receive a full refund if an authority rejects the photo.
Tips for a clean result
Patience matters more than equipment for young children. Take the photo when the child is calm, and keep the face level and centred in the frame.
Final checks before you submit
Before printing, confirm with the Federal Police whether your situation requires a photo at all. If it does, check the date on the photo so that it remains recent when you submit it. For a small child, a picture taken in daylight near a window usually gives better results than one taken with flash.
